North Carolina's Barrier Islands
The
Outer Banks (AKA OBX) and are a national treasure of pristine beaches and
also of havens for many and varied species of
waterfowl and wildlife. As you can see
on the map below, the barrier islands form a thin break
between the Atlantic Ocean and the large shallow bodies of brackish water
between them and the mainland. The inland water bodies are called sounds.
Along with the Atlantic, the sounds offer fantastic boating, skiing, and
sport fishing. Warmed by the nearby Gulf Stream,
Nag's Head and other oceanside beaches are fantastic for swimming, surf fishing,
and surfing. The bountiful offshore waters are a national treasure for sports
fishermen. While in the Kitty Hawk area, visit the Wright Memorial and Museum
where you can retrace the historic steps of Wilbur and Orville Wright as,
on December 17, 1903, they ushered in the age of flight for mankind.
See our OBX Transportation page for special
rates and information about transportation from the Norfolk International
Airport and other points in Hampton Roads, VA to Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Kill
Devil Hills and other destinations on North Carolina's beautiful Outer
Banks.
